Crochet Craftivism: Women's Rights in 2022

Writer: Tracy MorelandTracy Moreland

What is Crochet Craftivism? Sometimes when things happen in society, a person who crochets needs to release some energy. That is when Crochet Craftivism occurs.

Because I feel helpless, but also believe that one person can make a difference blah blahhh, I crochet my feelings and post them on instagram for everyone to see. A virtual rally cry, an artistic expression of resistance, in the form of a #virtualyarnbomb.

Recently, the Supreme Court of the United States made a decision that overturns Roe v Wade. As we all know, many states have quickly outlawed abortion with their trigger laws while other states work boldly to codify abortion laws. It's a very delicate time in Women's Rights history, that I honestly never expected to deal with in my lifetime until the leak in May '22. I'm an '80s baby and a world with Roe v Wade is all I've ever known.

Here's what I made in response to the SCOTUS decision that overturned Roe v Wade:

The original caption reads:

"Inspired by Women's Rights in 2022.

Based on the vintage design of the Hostess Apron. Isn't it sweet. It's only really half an apron but it's only for show so it doesn't really matter, it's not actually a functional thing, that would be way more effort than it's worth. This style went out in the 1970s, but I'm gonna go ahead and bring it back even tho nobody asked for it. There are some modern elements, like the taboo subject matter of the uterus, which let's be honest looks like an alien and must be pretty scary for most people. I don't really understand the scientific complexities of the uterus tbh but I went ahead and created a very loose suggestion of my interpretation, so it's super legit. I googled it, so you can trust me. I carry an artistic license so I can do whatever I want anyway. Funny thing, since this isn't actually a real garment, the waistband isn't long enough to tie. I was too lazy and didn't want to bother looking for more yarn, more interested in posting. But that's ok, I created a loophole in the back, so it can look like it's tied up even though it's really not. I mean whatever, I'll probably just throw this in the back of my closet, look at it a couple times then just unravel it later. Who caaares, like I said, it's not a real garment anyway, it's just for show.

.

tl;dr I'm pissed about the recent scotus decision that overturns roe v wade

Also that weekend, I created the first ever (to my knowlege) Uterus Granny Square. I know you want the pattern, I'm working on it!! Follow me on insta and etsy to get it when it's live!!

The original caption for this piece reads:

"Look at this awesome granny square I made the weekend of Friday, June 24, 2022. I totally forgot about it. Super creepy right, just in time for Halloween. #pinkalien#grannysquare#crochetuterus#riproevwade#scarycrochet#wipwednesday

As you can see, I'm making the best out of a terrible situation. I'm just lucky and grateful to be living in California, a sanctuary state.

Let me know what you think! Share your own craftivism with me! Let's do some kind of crazy big community project.
