Free Crochet Eye Pattern!

Updated: Oct 13, 2022

Ok you have to sign up for my emails to get it, but other than that it's totally free! That's a good trade, right? I only send emails when I'm really excited about a new pattern or something really amazing.

What's unique about this Crochet Eye?

There are a lot of crochet eyes out there. I made mine to look a little different than all the others. With the Rainbowwips Crochet Eye, you do take an extra step that most people don't include. That's what makes it so special. It really doesn't take too much extra time and it's worth the effort, imho.

It's pretty simple, but see how the whites of eyes are separate? Most people just crochet the white right around the iris. I make my eyes this way because it's how I would draw them on a piece of paper. Eyes that have the whites all the way around look way too "at attention" to me.

Also, I don't put a white gleam in the center of the pupil like many people. This does take away from the "life" of the motif. But at the same time, to me it looks more mysterious and alien. You can go ahead and put a gleam if you want though, I think that would look great too.

Why do People Crochet Eyes?

I can only speak for myself, but I love making eyes as a symbol of awakening and awareness. I'm a secular person so I don't subscribe to stories about warding off evil spirits, it's just not what I believe. However, I definitely agree that keeping a positive mindset will help keep away negative thoughts. It's all about the internal locus of control, for me.

A symbol of awakening and awareness

And let's be real. It's just our zeitgeight, the spirit of our times. People are indulging in higher level thinking, mindfulness, awareness and self care. It's a trend. A great trend that I'm here for.

What Crochet Skill Level do you Need for This Pattern?

This is definitely a beginner level project! It shouldn't take you longer than an hour at the very most. It's also a great project for yarn scraps.

You'll need a basic knowledge of crochet to complete this pattern. It includes the following terms: sl, sc, hdc, dc, tr, inc, BLO, sts

Do those all make sense to you? If not, no worries, it's actually all super simple. Here's a screen shot of the terms from the pattern. These are the things you'll need to know.

Honestly, the hardest thing about this project is reading the pattern! Be sure to read all the notes and look at all the pictures carefully.

Another awesome thing is that gauge is not really important for this pattern. That just takes away some extra stress, if you ask me. :) Although if you have any trouble, don't hesitate to send me a message!
